This edition follows on the theme of the last edition of Cuttings on the benefits of a clear and enforced culture on the performance of an organisation with some comments from US leadership coach and writer, John Baldoni.
And enjoy the extra collection of quotations and some seasonal celebrations other than Christmas and Hogmanay.

No sooner had I published the last edition of Cuttings with its lead article on the Stagecraft of Steve Jobs than he announced his medical retirement from the position of Apple CEO. I hope that this edition of Cuttings does not have the same effect on the featured writers :-)
In this edition, I have come across a couple of pieces of research in similar areas - the benefits of a clear and enforced culture on the performance of an organisation. First some work done at HBS on the benefits of strong and adaptive cultures over charismatic leadership, and the second some work done on performance management in the economic reality of today. Both stress the importance of leadership and consistency in approach.
Enjoy reading and join the discussion.

The new edition is now published and online. This edition has articles I have noticed in the press in the past couple of months, including some lessons of leadership from the Stagecraft of Steve Jobs, the charismatic CEO of Apple. Also - have you thought why some companies thrive in difficult situations when others fail? Some answers from the Hay Group research into the World's Most Admired Companies. Finally some thoughts on employee engagement - a regular theme recently - from Roffey Park's research.
Enjoy - and join the discussion on the forum

Once again, engagement of employees seems to be a theme in a number of research studies and articles. So I quote from a couple which add value to the debate - this seems to be a topic of the era of delivering more successful organisations through human rather than mechanical approaches.

What causes some organisations to outperform others?
According to recent research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development published in the report Shared purpose: the golden thread? it is that employees are aligned to a shared purpose.
Most organisations do have a purpose and for many it tends to be ‘profit-based’. However, despite this being a common purpose, making profit for investors and owners does not ‘fire up’ the workforce, in fact those organisations with a profit base purpose tend to be out of sync with employees. Having a shared purpose that employes can engage with is key. Just having a purpose is not enough. In the survey a high proportion of employees stated that their organisations did have a clear sense of purpose, but far fewer believe that it was a shared sense of purpose.
You can read more about this in the latest edition of Cuttings, now available on this website. Also in this edition, there is more from the Hay Group survey of the 10 Best Companies for Leadership, as well as the usual collection of quotations and thought provoking statements.
