What causes some organisations to outperform others?

According to recent research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development published in the report Shared purpose: the golden thread? it is that employees are aligned to a shared purpose.

Most organisations do have a purpose and for many it tends to be ‘profit-based’. However, despite this being a common purpose, making profit for investors and owners does not ‘fire up’ the workforce, in fact those organisations with a profit base purpose tend to be out of sync with employees. Having a shared purpose that employes can engage with is key. Just having a purpose is not enough. In the survey a high proportion of employees stated that their organisations did have a clear sense of purpose, but far fewer believe that it was a shared sense of purpose.

You can read more about this in the latest edition of Cuttings, now available on this website. Also in this edition, there is more from the Hay Group survey of the 10 Best Companies for Leadership, as well as the usual collection of quotations and thought provoking statements.
